Natural Process: Long Shore Drifts
Secondary Research:
Longshore drift can be defined as a natural process which consist of the movement also known as transportation of sediment including sand along the coastline which sometimes depend on the movement of the wind or by how strong the waves are. An examples of this would be when the wave hits the beach at an angle causing the beaches sand to be pushed back onto the beach at the same speed as the swash.
Impact on coastal environments:
In Australia some long shore drifts have created islands to build barriers around them which can be narrow strips of sand and gravel that has been separated from the shore, they can also cause spits to build up at the mouths of rivers and lakes or at one end of a land.
Impacts on coastal communities:
Longshore drifts sometimes cause the rate of erosion process to speed up which later makes houses at risk of washing away.
Primary Research:
Cronulla Beach:
On Thursday 25th august 2016, Year 10 students went to Cronulla Beach to investigate what natural and human processes are affecting the coastlines in Australia and to what degree they are being managed. By going onto the Beach we have discovered that the long-shore drift was heading to the left due to that this can be seen by looking at between eh waves.
North Gong Beach:
On the 27th August, my family and I went to North Going beach to collect more primary research on how the natural and human processes are impacting the coastlines in Australia. By doling this we have discovered that the long-shore drift at this beach was as well heading to the left.
